Buckhead is the name of a large northern section of Atlanta. It is home to the Governors Mansion, top notch restaurants, elegant shopping and high end real estate. The name “Buckhead” came from a large stuffed buck’s head on the wall of a Tavern which was owned by Henry Irby and which opened in 1837. It was located at the intersection of Roswell Road and West Paces Ferry Road near a Creek Indian Trail. (now known as Peachtree Road) The popular establishment was able to survive the Civil War, and Sherman’s march to the sea. Formerly known as Irbyville, the name “Buckhead” was adopted as the name of the community. Buckhead and Atlanta were founded approximately at the same time.
Buckhead was annexed into the city in 1952. It was the next town north of Atlanta, It now has about 100,000 residents and includes all of Atlanta north of Midtown. Buckhead is the area between the Chatahoochee River north of Peachtree Creek, west of Roxboro Rd/Peachtree Dunwoody all the way north to I 285. The city recognizes a 28 acre area as “Buckhead” but the residents call the larger area “Buckhead”.
There is much to do and see in Buckhead. From wonderful neighborhood parks, golf and tennis centers, the horse park at Chastain, the amphitheater at Chastain Park, the shopping centers of Phipps Plaza and Lenox Square, to world class hotels and fine dining.
The Atlanta History Center with the Swan Coach House

The Swan Coach House, was originally a private home designed by famed architect Philip Trammell Shutze. It was purchased by the Atlanta History Center and restored to its original glory. The home and gardens include the Tullie Smith Farm which is one of the few buildings to survive the Civil war. It was built in 1840 and was brought to the grounds in 1969. The outbuildings and gardens were recreated and it provides a facinating glimpse of the life in Georgia before the Civil war.
