On July 31, 2012, in a referendum, Brookhaven was approved to become a city. The official incorporation was on December 17, 2012, making it DeKalb County's 11th city.
Originally, Brookhaven was just a neighborhood north of Atlanta city limits but inside the I285 perimeter. It was just north of Lenox Square off Peachtree Rd. It was originally planned as a golf course community, with elegant homes overlooking the views and was to the west of Peachtree Rd. This is the "old" part of Brookhaven. It was then and still is a prestigious address and has very valuable properties. The area east of Peachtree had gradually also come to be called Brookhaven by the residents, the builders and the Realtors (although some people to the west disagreed) and was somewhat more affordable. Historic Brookhaven on the National Register of Historic Places Brookhaven which is also known as Historic Brookhaven is the area north or west of Peachtree around the Capitol City Country Club and Golf course.
